2008 Kasino Concept and Speisekarte (Feldportionen)

Our FJ-Kasino (Mess Hall) promises to be one of the neatest living history aspects of the event. We'll utilize a Kasino within walking distance of our barracks site, and serve meals "family style" like a real German Kasino.

Just like in a German Kasino, we'll eat "family style" each meal, each squad assigned to a table. Each squad will have to provide a squad member for each meal to perform "kitchen duties". This requires nothing more than arriving at the Kasino 30 minutes before each meal, filling your unit's serving bowls/platters and bringing it to your table, replenishing the table's beverage pitcher when needed, and then at completion of the meal, cleaning your squad's serving bowls, tables, floors, etc so that the Kasino is ready for the next meal.

What to bring: - Each man should bring along an original ceramic German dinner plate, mess hall utensils (i.e., Luftwaffe fork, spoon, and knife), a soup bowl, and some sort of period drinking vessel (Stein, Krug, ceramic cup, etc). Most guys already have this stuff, but never get to use it... Until now!

If you don't have originals stuff, that's ok; a plain white ceramic dinner plate can be purchased at many stores or kitchenware outlet for $1; same goes for a plain white ceramic soup bowl. If you don't have original mess hall silverware, then a set of plain, simple flatware can be picked up at a local thrift store for under $1.

Most reenactors have some sort of period-looking drinking stein. If not, Erich Loych sells beautiful repro "Kreta" mugs, and the event is selling really nice beer glasses etched with the FJ-Badge.

Additionally, we'll need each attending unit to bring some specific mess gear. Each unit needs to bring some sort of serving platter, 2 serving bowls, 2 aluminum/stainless steel serving ladles, and some sort of plain beverage pitcher. Here are some samples:
